Ignition interlock device requirements and costs
If you've been convicted of DUI, you may be required to install an ignition interlock device (IID) in your vehicle. This electronic device tests your breath before allowing the engine to start. While it's an additional expense and inconvenience, understanding how it works and what's required can help you meet your reinstatement obligations.
What is an ignition interlock device?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breathalyzer that connects to your vehicle's ignition system. Before you can start your car, you must blow into the device. If it detects alcohol above the programmed limit (typically 0.02 BAC), the engine won't start.
Beyond preventing impaired driving, IIDs also monitor compliance:
- They record every attempt to start your vehicle
- They log alcohol detection levels
- They flag attempted tampering or circumvention
- They create reports for the court and DMV
When is an IID required?
Mandatory IID states
Some states require IID for all DUI convictions, regardless of first or repeat offense:
- Arizona (all DUI convictions)
- New Mexico (all DUI convictions)
- Nevada (first offense if BAC 0.15+)
- Virginia (mandatory for all)
Optional/discretionary states
Other states leave IID requirement to the judge's discretion:
- California, Texas, Florida, New York typically require for second+ offense or high BAC
- Judges may order IID even for first offense if circumstances are severe
IID duration
- First offense: 1-2 years typical
- Second offense: 2-5 years typical
- Repeat offenses: 5+ years possible
- Early removal: Some states allow removal after 50% of period if clean record
Driving without an IID when required, tampering with it, or blowing a positive breath test can result in: license suspension extension, criminal charges, increased fines, and mandatory longer IID requirement. Don't bypass it.
How ignition interlock devices work
Pre-start process
- Turn on ignition for system startup (no breath test yet)
- Device displays "Ready to test" (usually within 1-3 seconds)
- Provide steady breath sample for 5-10 seconds
- Device analyzes and displays result
Results: Pass or fail
- Pass (below limit): Engine start enabled; green light, beep indicates success
- Fail (above limit): Engine won't start; red light, warning beep; recorded as violation
- Inconclusive: Retest requested; typically allows one retry
Rolling retests
During operation, most IIDs require random rolling retests (typically every 45 minutes). If you fail a rolling retest while driving, the horn honks and lights flash to alert you. Early removal programs may reduce rolling retests.
IID cost breakdown
Installation
- Professional installation: $50-$150
- Initial calibration: Included with installation
Monthly monitoring and maintenance
- Monthly service fee: $50-$150/month
- Monthly calibration check: Usually done during service visit
- Device replacement: Typically replaced annually as part of service schedule
Removal
- Professional removal: $50-$150
- Final data download: Usually included
Total cost example
For a 2-year (24-month) IID requirement:
- Installation: $100
- Monthly service (24 months × $75): $1,800
- Removal: $100
- Total: approximately $2,000
For a 3-year requirement, costs exceed $2,700-$3,600 depending on provider and service frequency.
In all states, the convicted driver pays all IID costs. Courts don't subsidize it, and you cannot reduce the cost through financial hardship claims in most states. You can only shop providers for slightly better rates.
Finding an IID provider
- Your court typically provides a list of approved providers
- Call multiple providers to compare installation and monthly fees (they vary significantly)
- Ask about: monthly cost, installation cost, service locations, remote monitoring options
- Installation must be done at approved facility; typically takes 30-60 minutes
- All providers transmit data to court/DMV, so choose based on service quality and price
Some IID providers now offer remote monitoring—you can do your monthly calibration check by video call instead of visiting a service center. This saves time and is worth asking about when comparing providers.
IID violations and consequences
Common violations
- Positive breath test: Recorded and reported to court
- Failed rolling retest: Counts as violation
- Missed rolling retest: If vehicle running and retest requested but not provided
- Tampering: Disconnecting device, attempting bypass, moving to another vehicle
- Missed service appointments: Can trigger license suspension
What happens with violations
- Court is notified via data download
- Judge decides if you'll face additional penalties
- Possible outcomes: Continue program, extended IID requirement, jail time, license revocation
Timeline from DUI to IID installation
- Day 1: Arrested for DUI
- Days 15-45: First court appearance; sentencing if convicted with IID requirement
- Days 30-60: Obtain list of approved IID providers from court
- Days 60-90: Contact provider and schedule installation (queue may exist)
- Days 60-100: IID installed in your vehicle
- Ongoing: Monthly calibration appointments for duration of requirement
Don't wait until the court deadline to schedule IID installation. Providers often have waiting lists, especially after major holidays or weekends. Schedule as soon as your conviction is certified, even if you have months before the requirement begins.
Getting removed from IID requirement
Early removal eligibility
Some states allow early removal after:
- 50% of the required period completed with NO violations
- Court approval and petition
- Clean IID data record
- No new violations or arrests
Note: Not all states allow early removal. Check your state's rules.
How to petition for early removal
- Contact your sentencing court
- File a petition after completing the required portion
- Request IID data download and proof of compliance
- Appear for hearing if required
- Court approves or denies based on your record
